Ischgl

Set high up in the Paznuan valley in the inspirational Silvrettta mountains Ischgl is rated as one of Austria’s better resorts with a substantial area of high north and south facing skiing between 2700m and 2900m.

There are abundant wide and easy runs above the tree line, more reminiscent of good French resort pistes, complemented by some interesting runs back to village level through the woods. There is also a very worthwhile series of longer cruising runs, motorways and some more challenging black standard runs over the upper mountain.

Ischgl has become increasingly widely regarded as the chic alternative to St. Anton where there is the capacity for the determined good skier to clock up 10000 metres of vertical in a day without too much trouble. Ischgl has the added advantage of being linked on the slopes to duty free Samnaun crossing the ‘border’ in to Switzerland with some of the better skiing over in the frontier zone . Ischgl mixes traditional and neo- Tyrolean hotels, smaller pensions in with the atmospheric older rustic buildings, serving up a lively apres ski ambience popular with Germans, Austrians and the few British.

Ischgl represents a developed, bustling but compact snowsports centre with some good shops, bars and lively nightlife.

There is even an outpost of the renowned Ibiza club, Pacha, within the Hotel Madlein – no sand or sea views though…….

This fantastic family-run eatery offers a warm welcome and hearty food to refuel you after a long day on the slopes.
