Madonna Di Campiglio
Madonna is perhaps better known as an elegant, fashionable, stylish resort with a strong Italian following rather than a centre of excellence for testing skiing. Indeed the ski area although reasonably extensive with over 90 kms of prepared skiing served by a massive armoury of 400 snow making guns on 30kms of them, majors on flattering immaculately groomed intermediate terrain but it also has some presentable beginners skiing and a clutch of more challenging black pistes. The village of Madonna di Campiglio itself is set in a spectacular sheltered sunny valley in the Brenta Dolomites and is linked via the efficient lift system to Folgarida and Marilleva to open up a further 60kms of additional prepared terrain. Madonna’s heritage stretches back to the 17th century when it was a staging post for crossing the alpine passes. Once the hunting preserve of the Hapsburg Royal family, it became a popular very upmarket summer mountain resort against one of the most spectacular alpine vistas of the Dolomites, complete with picture postcard lakes and pine forests. Folgarida links in with Madonna on the Monte Vigo sector (2180m) and is a smaller, purpose built satellite village constructed in a charming style including 15 traditional chalet style hotels. It has its own network of lifts serving mainly easy and intermediate terrain.
Accommodation & Après Ski
The village mixes the traditional architecture with more modern developments – such as that at Campo Carlo Magno. There are more than 30 restaurants, a good selection of bars – from intimate to fashionable, a natural skating rink and a full sized Olympic swimming pool. Accommodation varies from self catering apartments to the formidable battery of four and three star hotels.
